'Organic' is a regulated term used to distinguish systems of managed production and products derived therefrom that adhere to principles of health, ecology, fairness and care, and which are certified compliant to an organic standard's regulations by an Approved Certification Body.
GOTS defines organic textiles as being made with fibres from organic agriculture systems that are certified to one of the IFOAM Family of Standards, and that are processed in socially and ecologically responsible ways, in alignment with organic principles.

") would like to set the record straight on a recent misleading claim by a company stating they hold a certification that’s “More important than organic” and “Textiles with the organic label can still be treated with toxic chemicals at a later stage of production”. While this is possible for uncertified products made from organic fibers, this is a misleading statement for textiles certified and labelled to the Global Organic Textile [Standard](https://gots.vorschau.website/resources/glossary/standard "standard glossary text
") (GOTS). GOTS protects [workers](https://gots.vorschau.website/resources/glossary/worker "Any individual engaged in work who is not a senior manager or owner.
") and environment at every stage of production and the GOTS approved “[Positive List](https://gots.vorschau.website/resources/glossary/positive-list "GOTS Positive List contains GOTS-compliant chemical products which are evaluated and approved by GOTS approved chemical auditors. The List provides trade names of the chemicals and immediate access to all chemical Inputs which are allowed to use GOTS products.

") with the lowest possible toxicity effects available. GOTS certified products all begin on an organic farm. For any agricultural product to be sold as “Organic” in the United States (no matter where in the world the crop is grown) the raw fiber must have been certified to the USDA’s National Organic Program’s (NOP) Crop Standard. This includes cotton, flax, hemp, etc. Sheep’s wool and other animal fibers must have been raised to the USDA’s NOP Livestock standard. Organic production systems maintain soil fertility and expand biological diversity through crop rotation, they also prohibit the use of synthetic toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers, as well as genetically engineered seed. Third-party certifiers verify that organic producers meet strict federal regulations addressing methods and materials allowed in organic production. Some textile standards are not related to organic or natural products in particular and include petroleum based, synthetic fibres. Those products never decompose and are the cause of plastic fibre particles in the waste stream polluting rivers and oceans.
