#  GOTS invited to speak at ‘Smart Vision 2020’ by SASMIRA, Mumbai

The Synthetic and Art Silk Mills' Research Association organized a gathering of its alumni on 14th October, 2015 in Mumbai, India. The theme of the event was ‘Smart Vision 2020’. [GOTS](https://gots.vorschau.website/resources/glossary/gots "<p>The worldwide leading voluntary sustainability standard for the post-harvest textile value chain for certified organic fibres, covering environmental criteria, human rights, social criteria and business conduct.</p>") representative in India Mr. Sumit Gupta was invited as an external expert to speak on ‘[Sustainability](https://gots.vorschau.website/resources/glossary/sustainability "<p>In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”</p>") and GOTS Certification for Holistic Growth’. Mr. Gupta spoke about basic features of GOTS as a sustainability [standard](https://gots.vorschau.website/resources/glossary/standard "<p>standard glossary text</p>") and how sustainability related research initiatives are vital to holistic growth of textile industry.

He emphasized that the entrepreneurs need to take a top-down approach to sustainability and the top management must adopt sustainable practices as a management approach for long term competitive gains, rather than responding to external demands for compliances and sustainable products. The lecture was much appreciated by the organisers and attendees, which comprised of both industry professionals and entrepreneurs.
